During the second presidential debate between incumbent Barack Obama and his Republican contender Mitt Romney, both agreed that employers should be mandated to provide contraception coverage to their staff.
The debate was held Tuesday night at Hofstra University near Long Island, New York, and was moderated by CNN’s Candy Crowley.
Obama:“Governor Romney not only opposed it; he suggested that, in fact, employers should be able to make the decision as to whether or not a woman gets contraception through her insurance coverage,” Obama continued. “That’s not the kind of advocacy that women need.”
Romney: “I’d just note that I don’t believe that bureaucrats in Washington should tell someone whether they can use contraceptives or not, and I don’t believe employers should tell someone whether they could have contraceptive care or not,” Romney noted. “Every woman in America should have access to contraceptives.”

HarperCollins Publishers today announced it was buying Christian/inspirational publisher Thomas Nelson “for an undisclosed sum.” It’s a huge move since the company will now reportedly control about half of the Christian publishing market.
The question now is how the acquisition will play with Zondervan, Thomas Nelson’s chief competition. HarperCollins, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, acquired Zondervan in 1988. (It also owns religion and spirituality imprint HarperOne.) Thomas Nelson says it is reportedly the largest Christian publisher in the world and the seventh largest trade-book publisher in the United States. Zondervan says it is the world’s leading Bible publisher.

The United Nations is recommending that children as young as five receive mandatory sexual education that would teach even pre-kindergarteners about masturbation and topics like gender violence.

He warned of a “check-point society” where everyone carries an internal passport and has to show their papers at every turn, he said.

Advocates say electronic verification could help parents or caregivers keep track of children and the elderly. Chips could be used to easily access medical information, and would make going through security points more convenient, reports say.
