The Atonement

lamb of god

Christ’s Atonement is a work of God alone (without the help of man, or the earthly Levitical priesthood of the Old Covenant), through the death of his Son, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:3, Hebrews 9:1-15). This death of the sinless Son of God was the payment for our sins, and for the whole world (1John 2:2, Hebrews 9:13-14). That includes people of all nations, and especially the elect of God, the Father, whom he called, and chose before the foundation of the world, to believe the gospel, and receive the promised inheritance of eternal life (Hebrews 9:15-17, John 3:14-17, 1Timothy 4:10).  Christ’s Atonement has secured for us the only way of escape from the wrath of God, and from the bondage to sin (Hebrews 2:14-18, John 14:6, John 3:14-18). It has, also, cleansed the conscience of sinners, from the commands of the Old Covenant law, and from man-made traditions. so that they can serve God in Spirit, and in truth (Hebrews 9:14, Colossians 2:6-23, John 4:19-24).

Christ’s act of complete obedience to his Father, who consecrated him as High Priest by an oath, made him the necessary sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 7:25-28, John 5:19). This act of obedience consisted of living as a man, suffering in the flesh, not giving into temptation, and laying down his life for sinners (John 17:19, Matthew 4:1-1-10, Luke 24:44-47)

Christ has been risen from the dead so that those who believe in him would be raised from the dead to live forever, set free from sin, and live a new life of righteousness (Luke 24:44-47, Romans 6:4-11, 1Corinthians 15:12-26). He is now seated at the right hand of God as the Great High Priest who makes intercession for those who believe, and to present them faultless before the Father (Hebrews 1:3, 1John 1-2, Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 7:25-28, Jude 1:24, 1Thessalonians 5:23-24, Philippians 1:6).

Christ paid for the sins of everyone, including the false prophets, who deny the master, who bought them.

2 Peter 2
1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Christ blood sanctified the false converts, who believed for a time, and later turn away, and tread on the Son of God, by treating the blood of the covenant, which sanctified them, as unholy and have insulted the Spirit of Grace, who commands everyone to repent, and believe that Christ died for them.

Hebrews 10
26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Hebrews 6
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Therefore, Jesus Christ, because of his Atonement, is the Savior of everyone, especially of those who believe; the elect (Romans 8:28-30, John 6:44-51).

1 Timothy 4
10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those who believe.

Christ’s Atonement is the payment for the sins of the world, so that he could have the elect, whom the Father gave him before the foundation of the world. The world is the field, and the elect of God, the Father, is the treasure.

Matthew 13
44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

Jesus commands his church to tell the world to repent, and believe that Christ died for them.

Matthew 28
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 1
14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Luke 24
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

And Jesus Christ will return and punish everyone who does not know him, and does not obey his command to repent and believe that he died for them.

2Thessalonians 1
6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

God’s wrath remains on those who refuse to repent and believe that Christ died for them.

John 3
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
